You can talk to your local law enforcement agency and see if they will provide free criminal background checks (in the USA, by local state only) to your nonprofit organization. Some do.

There are no free checks provided at the national level; you or a sponsor must pay for national checks.

Check with your city or county attorney (if you are in the USA) regarding what criminal background checks you are required to do by law in your state (it will depend on what the employee or volunteer will do at your organization).

Finally, be aware that criminal background checks are a poor way of screening out people who would be inappropriate to work at your organization. Your screening and supervision system must be very detailed and well-enforced to protect staff and clients from a harmful situation -- this is much more important than a criminal background check. If you don't have Linda Graff's book, "Beyond Police Checks", you should get a copy ASAP. Search on Google for how to order it.

They are done in Michigan by the state police. I assume other states do the same. It costs 25/person to run the check. Talk to them, they may be able to give you a discount. They did with a non-profit youth center I was on the board with....discounts to run the background check with our volunteers. You want to make sure it's an official check, not one you are running on-line. Good luck!
