Question:
What are some reasons that federal jobs are reposted?

A few months ago my wife, who has every possible qualification imaginable in her profession, and is currently a federal employee seeking a lateral transfer, submitted an application to the Indian Health Services for a job opening they had announced. It closed and she waited an appropriate amount of time, hearing nothing from them the entire time. Finally she called and was told a decision hadn't been made at that point. The very next day the job was reposted. The reason given was to solicit additional job candidates. She called again and was told that the hiring manager can request a repost without giving any specifics, which is what happened in this case. We assume that she is no longer being considered for this position, although she was told that her application is still in the pool for consideration. But then why would they repost if they have qualified applicants from the first posting? Does anyone have knowledge of how this system works?
Thanks

If sufficient number of candidates have not applied (who meet the requirements), the agency will cancel the announcement and rewrite and repost the position again.

The reposting is also done if the announcement has omitted certain criteria

If your wife still wants to be considered, she should apply again - with a fresh approach to the KSA's, new personal recommendations, updated resume.

Has she met the "time in grade" for her current position? Lateral transfers within one agency aren't the same thing as moving between federal agencies.

She's correct to assume her application didn't make the cut. So sit down with the duties & qualifications for this new position and rewrite her answers to the KSA'S so it demonstrates she has already used some of the needed skills.

Funding cuts, too few applications, etc.. also contribute to a lack of hires. Good luck...

Ugh. There are so many reasons. The candidates that did qualify may not have had enough points to meet the criteria that the selection agent set. Additionally, there may have been something in the original posting that was left out. Also, if a vet or higher grade did not apply but wanted to, they can reopen the post for the person to apply and see where they end up on the selection list.

They will repost if they feel they need to solicit for more qualified candidates (meaning they were not satisfied with what was received). If they get no more, they will have to choose from the pool they have or choose to not fill the position (former US Fed/DC)
